What is graph paper?
Graph paper is a unique type of paper that includes evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines creating a grid pattern. The most common use is probably for plotting mathematical functions, although it is also useful for technical drawings. Some people also like to use graph paper to help practice their hand writing as the small squares provide a good guide for the height and also the thickness of each letter.
Where may I get graph paper?
Graph paper is usually readily available in book stores and stationary stores. You could also search Amazon for an extensive range of printed and bound resources and see what is most suitable for your use. There are some beautiful options to choose from, along with just reams of printed sheets that would be great as handouts and single use sheets.
If you prefer the flexibility of printable graph paper then we have a free printable graph paper pdf available on the Taskpins Website too! This provides you with the flexibility to print as you go, and you are able to print any time instantly.
How Kids Benefit From Graph Paper
Children will benefit from using graph paper to help visualize Maths. Graph paper allows kids (and adults) to plot equations to see what the curve looks like. If you have a data set you could show this as a bar chart. The ability to visualize data is a very useful skill set to have as it makes it easier to understand and identify trends.
One of the other very important but lesser known uses of graph paper is to help improve hand writing. Using the small squares created by the horizontal and vertical lines, you can use this to measure both the height and width of letters. Through practice, your penmanship is likely to see improvement too. Apart from practicing your English lettering, you can also use graph paper to practice your Chinese Character Strokes too along with Mi Zi Ge Paper that also works well! If you are looking for a more traditional penmanship printable pdf for free we also have this available on our Taskpins Website.
Should I Use Graph Paper or Dot Grid Paper
A common question we often are asked is if graph paper or dot grid paper is a better option. This is really down to what you would like to achieve and your personal preference. The benefit of graph paper is that it includes very small squares allowing you to more accurately plot data, create diagrams such as floor plans and technical drawings, and of course practice hand writing. Dot grid paper on the other hand includes only the dots marking the corner of each square, so to speak. This is great as a general template, and for many people is less overwhelming as the vertical and horizontal darker lines are usually not traced out, hence dot grid paper will look lighter. Have a look at and download our Free Printable Dot Grid Paper to see which one you prefer. As a side note, both may be used in portrait and landscape orientation.
